    US FEDERAL COURT JUDGE CONDUCTS TRAINING ON JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE FOR PROSPECTIVE JUDGES

    Visiting Baku Mr. Roberto Lamponi, Director of Legal Co-operation and Ms. Anna Capello–Brillat, Head of the Division for Legal and Judicial Reform at the Council of Europe’s Directorate General of Human Rights and Legal Affairs met here on Tuesday with Azerbaijan Minister of Justice, Chairman of the Judicial-Legal Council Mr. Fikrat Mammadov.
    The Minister noted that Azerbaijan is closely collaborating with the Council of Europe towards modernization of the country’s judicial system enabling it to provide reliable protection of human rights. In this connection, he mentioned four joint events held the other day to focus on independence of judges, education of judges and prosecuting officials, as well as meetings of working groups on disciplinary issues and lectures delivered by COE experts for the candidates for judges.
    The visitors expressed their satisfaction with the judicial and legal reforms implemented in Azerbaijan, and share their views on the concrete joint events including those related to learning the precedent right in the European Court of Human Rights, trainings for judges and other lawyers within the country and abroad.
    They expressed the Council of Europe‘s readiness to joining the Word Bank’s “Modernization of Judicial System in Azerbaijan” project to assist in increasing its efficiency.
    On the same day, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, World Bank and Coucil of Europe had a trilateral meeting joined through a telebridge by the WB’s Headquarters in Washington DC to discuss practical steps towards cooperation for implementing the project.
    Council of Europe Secretary General’s special representative Mr. D. Bribosia and co-Chair of the Azerbaijan-COE working group J. Klaus attended the meeting.
